With Lok Sabha elections nearing, Congress has named Ajay Rai, UP Congress president, as its candidate from Varanasi, pitting him against Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Although Rai is known for contesting against PM Modi, his political journey started with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Ajay Rai began his career as a ‘karyakarta’ of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and later served as the convener of BJP’s student wing, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). He was elected as an MLA from the Kolasla seat in Varanasi three times on a BJP ticket.
However, Rai’s departure from the BJP came after he was denied a Lok Sabha ticket in 2009. He contested from Varanasi on a Samajwadi Party (SP) ticket but faced defeat. Rai joined the Congress in 2012 and won the newly-formed Pindra seat in Varanasi.
Despite facing defeats in Lok Sabha and Assembly polls, Rai continued to hold significant organizational responsibilities in the Congress. Known for his strongman image, he has been associated with various criminal cases over the years.
Rai’s journey reflects the complexities of Indian politics, showcasing shifts in party affiliations and electoral contests. As he once again contests against PM Modi in Varanasi, Rai’s candidacy adds intrigue to the electoral landscape, making the constituency a focal point of political discourse.
