Amit Shah is a prominent figure in Indian politics today, but his journey into this arena started from humble beginnings. Born in Mumbai in 1964, Shah hailed from a Gujarati Hindu family with a business background. His father ran a successful PVC pipe business, providing Shah with a stable upbringing.
After completing his education in Ahmedabad, Shah ventured into various fields, including working as a stockbroker and in cooperative banks. However, his true calling came when he became involved with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) during his college days. The RSS is a Hindu nationalist organization, and Shah’s involvement with them marked his entry into the world of politics.
Shah’s political career began in the 1980s when he joined the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the RSS. In 1987, he officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one year before his close associate Narendra Modi joined the party.
Shah quickly rose through the ranks of the BJP, showcasing his organizational and management skills. He played a pivotal role in various election campaigns, including managing Lal Krishna Advani’s campaign in Gandhinagar during the 1991 Lok Sabha elections. Shah’s strategic approach and ability to connect with voters earned him recognition within the party.
In Gujarat, Shah and Modi worked together to strengthen the BJP’s presence, employing innovative strategies to expand the party’s reach. Shah’s leadership was instrumental in various initiatives, such as revitalizing cooperative banks and sports bodies in the state.
However, Shah’s political journey faced challenges, particularly in the form of legal controversies. He was accused of orchestrating extrajudicial killings and illegal surveillance during his tenure as Home Minister of Gujarat. Despite facing legal battles and periods of exile, Shah continued to remain active in politics.
His breakthrough came in the 2014 general elections when he was appointed as the President of the BJP. Under his leadership, the party witnessed significant electoral victories across various states. Shah’s reputation as a skilled strategist earned him the nickname of “modern-day Chanakya.“
In 2019, Shah assumed office as the Minister of Home Affairs, further solidifying his position as a key figure in the Indian government. He has been involved in implementing several policy changes, including the revocation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir and the introduction of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act.
